Why a 70% win rate can lose money

52,197 independently graded public picks, grouped by the price the handicapper took. Recounted at each site update. Last update November 3, 2026.

The finding

Picks priced at -200 or shorter won 71.0% of the time and still lost money: -3.9% ROI, because those prices needed 73.9% wins to break even. At standard spread and total prices (-105 to -120) the same crowd won 53.5% against 52.7% needed, +1.6% ROI. Win rate alone says almost nothing. Win rate against the price says nearly everything.

Pushes are left out of win rates. Needed win rate is the average break even rate implied by each posted price.

What it means for a handicapper’s record

Across 104 accounts with at least 100 decided, priced picks:

  • 5 accounts win 52.4% or more and are still down money. 52.4% is the break even rate at the standard minus 110. 5 of them took prices that needed more than that.
  • Of the 59 accounts that beat the win rate their own prices required, 95% are up money. Of the 45 that did not, 0% are up.

So the question to ask about any record is not how often it wins. It is whether it wins more often than its prices require, over enough picks to matter. Every Watchdog profile shows the win rate needed at that account’s own prices next to the win rate it achieved.

Method and limits

  • Source: the full graded history of every account whose history reproduces its headline record, the same history Watchdog Pro members see. Picks were posted in public before the start and graded on the final score at the posted price, one unit risked.
  • Price bands use the posted American odds. Picks without a posted price, and prices between minus 100 and plus 100, are left out.
  • Picks priced at plus 250 or longer (399 picks) are left out of the charts. An audit on November 3, 2026 compared every price of plus 150 or longer with the market price when it was posted and with the original post: 278 picks whose stored price did not match the bet (mostly player props, futures and combined bets read as a team moneyline) are now held out of every public record until reviewed, with their original posts and grades preserved. Many remaining long shots are in leagues with no market price to check against, so the band stays out until that check is complete.
  • These are accounts that post in public on the platforms Watchdog monitors, not all bettors. Results describe the past. They are not a prediction or betting advice.
