How much does a handicapper’s ROI mean after 30 picks?
Every independently graded account on the board, grouped by how many picks it has. Recounted from the live board at each site update. Last update November 3, 2026.
The finding
Small samples swing wildly. Among accounts with 20 to 49 graded picks, 26% show an ROI beyond plus or minus 20%, and the middle 80% runs from -19.2% to +27.2%. Among accounts with 100 to 249 picks, 7% are that extreme and the middle 80% narrows to -12.2% to +15.1%. A big ROI on a short record mostly measures luck, not skill.
ROI by sample size
| Graded picks | Accounts | Up money | Median ROI | Middle 80% of ROI | ROI beyond ±20% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 20 to 49 picks | 413 | 52% | +1.1% | -19.2% to +27.2% | 26% |
| 50 to 99 picks | 232 | 59% | +3.0% | -14.1% to +16.0% | 12% |
| 100 to 249 picks | 123 | 59% | +1.6% | -12.2% to +15.1% | 7% |
| 250 or more picks | 12 | 58% | +0.9% | -5.0% to +3.6% | 0% |
Win rate is not the same as profit
Of 135 accounts with 100 or more graded picks, 13 win at least 52.4% of their bets and are still down money, and 4 win less than half of their bets and are up. Odds decide that: a record built on favorites needs a higher win rate to profit, and plus money bettors can lose more often than not and still come out ahead. Judge a record by units and ROI at the posted odds, not by wins and losses alone.
By sport, accounts with 50 or more picks in that sport

| NFL | 51 | 63% | +2.2% | -4.8% to +11.9% |
| MLB | 40 | 32% | -5.2% | -10.4% to +3.8% |
| NHL | 17 | 76% | +7.5% | +1.3% to +12.9% |
Method and limits
- Source: the public Watchdog board (data/index.json), 3,033 accounts with graded picks. Anyone can recount these numbers from that file.
- A pick counts only if it was posted in public before the game started, graded against the final score at the odds posted. Held, duplicate and unreviewed picks are excluded.
- These are accounts that post picks in public on the platforms Watchdog monitors. They are not a random sample of all bettors, and accounts that stop posting keep their record in the data.
- Past results are not predictions. Nothing here is betting advice.
