The math

How many picks before a record means something?

Hot streaks are normal, even for bettors with no edge. Sample size is how you tell a streak from skill.

The short answer

At least 100 picks before a record says much, and several hundred before it says a lot. At minus 110, the normal swing in win rate from luck alone is about 5 points over 100 picks and about 1.6 points over 1,000 picks.

Luck is bigger than you think

The typical swing from luck in a win rate is roughly the square root of p times (1 minus p), divided by n, where p is the true win rate and n is the number of picks. With p near 50%:

PicksLuck swingNo edge range
2510 pts40% to 60%
1005 pts45% to 55%
5002.2 pts48% to 52%
1,0001.6 pts48.4% to 51.6%

A 56% record over 100 picks is well within what luck produces. A 56% record over 1,000 picks is not.

How Handicapper Watchdog uses sample size

Records under 20 picks are a small sample. From 20 to 99 they are developing. At 100 or more they are established, and the free rankings open on that list. Today there are 100 established records, and 56 of them are up money.

Reading any record

  • Ask how many picks, not how many wins.
  • Prefer records that span more than one season and more than one sport.
  • Check whether results are steady or come from one hot month.
  • Pair sample size with closing line value, which shows skill faster than wins and losses.

Common questions

Is 100 picks enough to judge a handicapper?

It is a starting point. Over 100 picks luck alone moves a win rate by about 5 points, so a strong 100 pick record is promising, not proof.

Why do so many hot handicappers cool off?

Many were never as good as their streak. With thousands of people posting picks, some will have great months by chance, and those are the records that get advertised.
