Units and ROI in sports betting, explained

Dollar results depend on bet size. Units and ROI let you compare any two bettors on the same scale.

The short answer

A unit is a standard bet size, often 1% to 2% of a bankroll. Units won is the net result in those units. ROI is units won divided by units risked. On Handicapper Watchdog every pick risks 1 unit at the posted price.

What a unit is

A unit is a fixed bet size that lets bettors talk about results without revealing their bankroll. If your unit is $50, a 1 unit bet is $50 and a result of plus 10 units is plus $500.

How units won is calculated

Suppose a handicapper goes 55 and 45 at minus 110, risking 1 unit on each pick. Each win returns 100/110 = 0.909 units. Wins: 55 × 0.909 = 50.0 units. Losses: 45 × 1 = 45 units. Net: plus 5.0 units.

How ROI is calculated

ROI = units won / units risked. In the example, 100 picks at 1 unit each risk 100 units, so ROI = 5.0 / 100 = 5.0%. ROI lets you compare a handicapper with 300 picks to one with 3,000, and a favorite bettor to an underdog bettor.

Traps in how results are reported

  • To win versus to risk. Some services grade every pick to win 1 unit, which makes favorites look cheaper than they are. Always ask which method is used.
  • Variable units. A 5 unit play that wins and 1 unit plays that lose can hide a losing record.
  • Missing prices. Units won is only real at a price that was available when the pick was posted.

Handicapper Watchdog risks 1 unit on every pick at the posted price, or at a reference price when a post has none. How we grade explains the rest.

Common questions

What is a good ROI in sports betting?

Over a large sample, a sustained ROI of 3% to 5% at standard prices is very good. Double digit ROI over hundreds of picks is rare.

Is units won or ROI more important?

ROI shows quality, units won shows volume. A handicapper with a high ROI over a small sample may simply be lucky, so read both alongside the number of picks.

How big should a betting unit be?

Many bettors use 1% to 2% of their bankroll. Only bet money you can afford to lose.
