Closing line value: the fastest test of a handicapper

Wins and losses take years to separate skill from luck. Closing line value starts telling the story in weeks.

The short answer

Closing line value, or CLV, compares the price a bettor got with the final price before the game started. Consistently getting better prices than the close is the strongest sign of a real edge, because the closing line is the market's most informed number.

How CLV works

Suppose you bet a team at minus 3 and the line closes at minus 4.5. You beat the close by 1.5 points. Or you bet at plus 140 and it closes at plus 120. You got a better price than the final market.

Markets move as money and information arrive. The closing line reflects the most of both, so beating it again and again is hard to do by luck.

Why CLV beats win rate as a signal

A single game result is noisy. Price movement is not. A bettor who beats the close over a few hundred bets is very likely to be a long term winner, even if a cold stretch hides it for a while. A bettor who regularly gets worse prices than the close will usually lose, even during a hot streak.

CLV and handicappers

When a popular handicapper posts a pick and the line moves right away, followers often get a worse price than the handicapper did. A record graded at the handicapper's price can be better than what a follower can actually get. That is one more reason to compare sportsbook prices before you bet.

Common questions

What is a good closing line value?

Any consistent positive CLV over a large number of bets is good. Small, steady price advantages add up.

Can you win long term without beating the closing line?

It is unlikely. Over a large sample, bettors who consistently get worse prices than the close tend to lose.
