Should you pay for sports picks? Do the math first

A subscription is a cost that has to be beaten before you make a dollar. Here is how to check whether it can be.

The short answer

Only if the handicapper has a public, timestamped record over hundreds of picks, and you bet enough for their edge to cover the fee. At a 4% ROI, a $100 a month service needs about $2,500 a month in wagers just to break even on the fee.

The break even math for a subscription

Expected profit = total wagered × ROI. To cover a fee: total wagered = fee / ROI.

Fee2% ROI4% ROI6% ROI
$50$2,500$1,250$833
$100$5,000$2,500$1,667
$250$12,500$6,250$4,167

These are monthly wagers needed just to cover the fee, assuming the past ROI holds and you get the same prices. Most of the time, neither is guaranteed.

Before you buy any picks

  • Is the record public, timestamped and over at least a few hundred picks? See what verified should mean.
  • Can you get the same prices after the pick is released? See closing line value.
  • Does the seller use any of the red flags?
  • Is your bankroll large enough that the fee is small next to your wagers?

Common questions

Are sports pick subscriptions worth it?

For most bettors, no. The fee usually costs more than the handicapper's edge earns at normal bet sizes. They can make sense only for proven records and larger bankrolls.

What should a sports picks service show before I pay?

A public, timestamped record of every pick, with prices, over a large sample, graded by someone independent.
